Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Woodworth

I want to take the time to introduce myself. My name is Carl Woodworth and I am the Speech, Debate, and Theater Teacher at Wharton High School. I graduated from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, BFA, in Theater Education and I have a minor in Speech. I am currently enrolled at the University of Houston working on my Master’s Degree.

I am in my fourteenth year of teaching, and twenty third year of being involved in Theater and Speech. I have done everything from directing, costumes, and lighting, to acting, singing and dancing. However, one thing I have learned is that one cannot do theater, speech or debate without commitment of the students and the support of the family and community. As we build this program, I hope to not only teach your children the fundamentals of theatre and the art of public speaking; I hope to build a passion for the arts themselves.

I will tell you that I have high expectations, and I do expect quite a bit out of my students. I am doing my best to change the way the surrounding schools, see us. Too often I hear so many negative comments about our school, our city, and our Academics. I am not going to make your child do anything that isn’t in the realm of their capability, nor will I shade the reality of the world from them. I will require manners, etiquette, appropriateness, tact, and responsibility. I ask for your help to reinforce these values when they are outside of school.

I also ask that if you would like to assist in any way, I would greatly appreciate the extra help. In the past, I have found that Theatre is very hard to do with only, one or two people and a few eager students who aren’t sure what they are doing. I am not the best builder, painter, or tailor, but I will do my very best to put forward the best productions possible. I will work with the students to make them more confident in themselves.

I look forward to meeting each and every one of you as we progress through the year. I look forward to having your children in our program. I mostly look forward to building this program and making a name for Wharton High School.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
