    Heath Roddy’s Bio

Heath Roddy became director of technology for Wharton ISD in June, 2017.   He has more than two decades’ experience in education fostering a mindset that technology integration, when done correctly, can have a huge impact on student learning.  Mr. Roddy’s entire teaching career has been invested in the community and students of Wharton ISD.

Mr. Roddy began his career in education in Wharton in 1996 as a 4th grade teacher at Dawson Elementary.  Working with an incredible group of team members, achieving academic success for all students with a priority for all teachers.  Teaching math, science, social studies and health, Mr. Roddy worked to improve State testing scores of his students.  In 2007, Mr. Roddy had 8 Math warmup book published targeting questions students might see on state testing.  In 2009, Mr. Roddy began teaching at Wharton Elementary when Dawson Elementary was closed.

In 2010, Mr. Roddy has offered the position of Technology Integration Specialist for Wharton ISD.   With another opportunity to serve the community, teachers and WISD students, Mr. Roddy accepted the position where he served for the next 10 years.   During this time, the use of technology by students and faculty became a new exciting concept for Wharton.

In June 2017, Mr. Roddy accepted the position as Director of Technology for Wharton ISD.   The same year, he led the introduction of Wharton Junior High becoming a 1:1 campus.   The following year, this new initiative was extended to include 6th grade at Wharton Elementary and 9th grade at Wharton High School.  Since this time, with the help of wonderful foundations and district support, the district has put over 800 additional devices in the hands of our students, strengthening our network’s infrastructure, providing technology training for teachers as well as interactive projectors for campuses.

Mr. Roddy is a native of El Campo, graduating in 1985.

Welcome to the Technology Department of the Wharton Independent School District. Our focus is to support teaching and learning with technology throughout the district. We are working to redefine and transform the way students learn and communicate by promoting innovation, creativity, and collaboration.  Wharton ISD Technology Department is an important resource to our district as we provide all technology needs to students and staff.

We are committed to providing our students, teachers, administrators and staff the best possible technological learning and working environments possible. Technology is never flawless. We know how disruptive and frustrating it is when something is not working. Our tech specialists provide face-to-face, remote and phone support five days a week. Tech requests can be submitted 24/7.

A safe digital environment for all is a top priority for the technology department. We ensure compliance with the Child Internet Protection Act by requiring cyber safety training of all staff and mandating age-appropriate digital citizen lessons. All staff and students annually sign an acceptable use policy, promising online and offline responsible behavior.

As part of our initiative, we provide wireless access points (WAP) for all core classrooms on all campuses to support wireless devices such as Chromebooks, iPads and Kindles.  We also provide extensive content filtering to ensure our students are able to effectively and safely use the Internet as a learning tool. In addition to hardware and software support, we provide teachers and students effective instructional support that promotes the use of technology in the classroom in a format that is seamless and promotes the Blended Learning model using Google Drive and Google Classroom.

Our goal is to support faculty and staff with the tools that allow them to prepare our students to be 'career and college ready' in Wharton ISD.
